THE UMBRIAN MUG-August 1998

Greetings and Salutations!

Welcome to the seventh edition of the Umbrian Mug. If you know of a Duchy member who isn't getting the Umbrian Mug via mail or by picking up a copy personally at Fighter Practice, please let me know so that I can rectify that situation. Remember, the Mug is online too, available through the Duchy of Umbria web site at www.primenet.com/~cedrik.

IMPERIAL NOTE!

By Imperial Decree, the Duchy of Umbria is henceforth declared a Kingdom in the Empire of Adria!

Event Reports!

The Ducal Tourney was held on August 15th. We had both Combat and Arts Tourneys.

The Combat Tourney was run by Sir Cameron FitzCannon, our Minister of War & Joust.

The Sergeant's Shinai List was won by Michael Sinestro, which was his first win. The Sergeant's Renn List was won by Sire Keara Craig.

The Knight's Renn List was won by Sire Drake Lyttle.

The Ducal Prize for Most Entertaining Death was retained by Lord Sir Iain Duncan Mackintosh. And remember, this prize is only won if someone out-performs Lord Sir Iain in a Death Scene at a Ducal Tourney.

The Arts Tourney was won by ….. Well, in all honesty, I don't know. The points were not reported to the Minister of Rolls, who supplied the information used for the Mug this month. The only Arts award that is well-known is Michael Sinestro's Ducal Tourney Win with a Masterwork Bardic.

Canton Tourney…

As for the Canton Tourney, which was held on the 5th of August, it was a fine battle royale…

The Sergeant's Shinai List was won by Keegan. The Sergeant's Renn List was won by Cardano, who posted his first Tourney Win. The Knight's Renn List was won by Lord Sire Squire James the Red (Hey, that's me!). There was no Arts Tourney.

We honor all participants of the Events with a resounding Huzzah! And speaking of Huzzahs…

All members of the Duchy of Umbria, which is now known throughout the Empire as the Kingdom of Umbria!

The August Ducal Tourney Winners: Michael Sinestro in Sergeant's Shinai; Sire Keara Craig in Sergeant's Renn; Drake Lyttle in Knight's Renn. In the Arts Tourney, Michael Sinestro won a Masterwork with his Bardic.

For the Canton Tourney, Keegan won the Sergeant's Shinai, Cardano won the Sergeant's Renn (His first win!) and Lord Sire Squire James the Red won the Knight's Renn.

Michael Sinestro, who has advanced to the rank of Sergeant in Combat, and Chamberlain in Ministry.

Ye Olde Advertisements...

Medieval Menagerie, which is run by HRG Lady Dame Diana Lockerby and HE Viceroy Sire Waldham von Torsvon, is a fine place to purchase almost anything you need for your Medieval- Renaissance experience.

Alpha Far West Bookstore, which is run by Count Lord Sir Roland of the Icelands, is a fine place to purchase incense, Tarot cards, books, and other Medieval and New Age items.

WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT!

George and Candy Palmer, better known as Sire Keara Craig, are to be married on the 21st of September. The event will be held at North Mountain Park, at 7:30pm. They will be dressed in Garb for the Ceremony, so please dress accordingly. There is a permit in place for drinking at the park, and a BYOE (Bring Your Own EVERYTHING) party will be held on site after the Ceremony! Come on out and wish this happy couple all the best!

Did you know that the Membership Form you sign is a legal and binding document? You would be well advised to read and heed ALL of the words on the form.

When it says "allow 4 weeks for processing," that is exactly what it means! If you pay by check, please have the courtesy and common sense to not write a "Hot Check" to the Empire or the Duchy/Kingdom. Please be responsible enough with the account of your coffers that you do not cover your agreed up on debt.

A Message from the Sisterhood of the Free Amazons…

The intent of the Free Amazons is to promote a social foundation in which women can come together and share their dreams and aspirations of the Middle Ages with others.

We are a group of Searchers with open minds and open hearts. We will fight to protect all that ask for our protection.

We vow to teach all we know to any who would ask for guidance, but we will not preach our beliefs to those who would rather not hear them. We are in search of a better understanding of the Middle Ages world and the strengths we have within each of us. We choose to share our own personal strengths with any person that has a desire.

We are a society of warriors, whether it be on a physical, psychological or emotional platform. We are a society of free-thinking, free-spirited people!

How can we tell who you are, you may ask.

We have chosen to be known by these Symbols…

Our Motto is "Fi`anna Fa`il", meaning 'Soldiers of Destiny'…

Our Animal is the Wolf, which stands for intuition, learning and the shadows. We shall defend all in our pack…

Our Banner shall be an off-white background with 5 Swords interlocked to signify the 5 Council Elders as a united force. This also signifies that we are warriors and there is room for all on our Isle…

Our Favors shall be an off-white background with a gold Chalice crossed by a silver Sword. All members shall be able to wear this favor…

The Elder's Council consists of 5 members. For our first year, the council shall be the first 5 Founding Members. Thereafter, an election will be held. Nominees must be active members and in good standing with the Adrian Empire as well as the Sisterhood of the Free Amazons. They shall be nominated from the members at-large, and elected to the office by a majority of the Sisterhood.

The Elders shall be designated by a Rune and a color:

Protection - Black

Initiation - Blue

Unknowable - Purple

Journey - Green

Warrior - Gold

Each Elder shall display their Rune on their Free Amazon Sash of Office. At the end of their term of office, they shall hand over their Sash of Office to their Successors. A personal item of each Council Member will stay on the Sash and worn by the Successors, who will in turn add something of themselves to it upon their end of office.

THE ISLE OF SKYE…

We have migrated from all over Europe to this sacred place in order to learn the ways of others and teach all we know to any that would care to learn. Skye is an island off the western coast of Scotland, the largest of the Inner Hebrides group. Skye was ruled by the Norse between late 9th and 13th centuries, at which time it became part of Scotland. The Isle of Skye is a Vortex; it has no concept of a persons background. It attracts any with a desire to learn and grow. We are answerable to the Elders Council and the populace of the Free Amazons at-large for our actions; as well as to the Adrian Empire.

What must I do to become a Free Amazon, you may ask.

To Join us, you must:

1. Fill out and submit a data form (Available from the Elders.)

2. Be a member in good standing with the Adrian Empire.

3. Have the desire.

4. Agree to complete a Quest. The details of the Quest will be set down by the Council Elders.

To sever one's Allegiance to the Sisterhood of the Free Amazons, you must return ALL symbols of Alliance and ALL Free Amazon properties. Note: If you are not active for a period of 6 months, your name will be removed from the Rolls of the Sisterhood, and you will be asked to return all Free Amazon Properties.
