THE UMBRIAN MUG - January 1999

Greetings and Salutations!

Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Umbrian Mug. This edition covers the month of January. If you know of a Kingdom member who isn't getting the Umbrian Mug, please let me know so that I can rectify that situation.

The deadline for submission of articles for next month's Mug is February 24th, 1999.

A Message from the Thrones of Umbria!

Greetings to all of Our beloved populace!

BANNER WAR UPDATE: Keara Craig has secured the site for Memorial Day Weekend's Banner War. Coconino County Fairgrounds, just a mile or so South of Flagstaff, has beautiful wooded areas, open fields for combat, camping facilities, kitchen, showers, etc. There are also plenty of hotels in Flagstaff. Volunteers for various activities are always welcome, so contact Keara! Her number is listed on the last page of the Mug. The site will open at 3 p.m. on Friday and close at 3 p.m. on Monday. The site fee has yet to be determined, but it will include a feast Saturday night. Start making your plans for Banner War now!

Last month, We issued Royal Proclamation the Second hoping to encourage the growth of Houses (and other Estates) without costing them representation on the Royal Estates. Unfortunately, in Our research, we missed a section in the bylaws which prohibited any Estateholder from having more than one vote outside of proxies. Therefore, until We can present and pass a proposal to the Imperial Estates to allow Estates proportional voting, We must hereby rescind Royal Proclamation the Second. Our thanks to Our Royal Chancellor, Sir Waldham, for discovering the restriction.

Umbrian Royal Proclamations

Royal Proclamation the Fourth:

Prohibition of Solitary Privy Journeys.

Out of concern for the safety of Our populace and because of an incident in another kingdom, We hereby prohibit Umbrians from travelling alone to the public restroom at all Umbrian functions. Please always be aware of your surroundings and take someone else with you.

Royal Proclamation the Fifth:

To have fulfilled the obligations of your office (and thus to have earned your monthly ministry participation point), here is what is required: Estateholders: Listing of all members in your Estate (persona, name, address, phone number).

If any Estateholders, Viceroys or Ministers would like to see alterations in their monthly obligations, please see the Crowns or present a proposal to the Estates.

NEW VICEROYALTIES! We are pleased to announce the formation of two new Viceroyalties within the Kingdom of Umbria:

The Viceroyalty of Inverness, with Viceroy Sir Iain Mcintosh, is located in Deer Valley Park (19th Ave North of Union Hills Drive).

The Viceroyalty of Le Croix de Fir, with Viceroy Sir Rashalak, will be located at a yet-to-be-determined park in the Mesa area.

Congratulations to these two gallant and brave knights for expanding the reach of the Kingdom! In order to encourage and support of these two new Viceroyalties, the first Tourney in each new Viceroyalty will also be the Crown Tourney for that month.

A REMINDER TO ALL MINISTERS: Please make sure you have read and understand the duties of your office as described in the bylaws and manuals of the Adrian Empire. Also make sure you contact your Imperial counterpart on a regular basis. 'Regular' means 'monthly' unless the Crowns or your Imperial counterpart tells you otherwise. If you have questions, concerns or comments about your duties please contact the Crowns immediately.

A REMINDER TO ALL UMBRIANS: If you are leaving or entering an Estate (House, Barony, County or March), you MUST provide written notification to the Crowns. We are working to regularly publish the status of Estates and want to make sure that the information is accurate.

ROYAL EXCHEQUER MINISTRY POST: At the December 19th Royal Estates meeting, a new ministry post was created. The Royal Exchequer is responsible for procuring prizes for winners of Arts and Combat Tourneys. If you are interested in this ministry position, please contact the Crowns.

A REMINDER TO ALL ESTATE HOLDERS: At 2pm, February 20th will be a Royal Estates meeting. As always, the agenda is open to any and all proposals and business. This is your opportunity to let the voice of your Estate be heard and to effect how the Kingdom operates. Please don't let this opportunity slip away!

IMPERIAL GRAND ASSEMBLY: On February 27th & 28th will be the Imperial Grand Assembly in Las Vegas. Umbrian representation will be by the Crowns and two Counties. The agenda is available online at www.adrianempire.org and www.kingdomofesperance.org. All Umbrians are encouraged to read the agenda and its proposals, as well as travel to the IGA. The Crowns will have a hardcopy of the agenda at all Umbrian events. Please let the Crowns and your Count/Countess (either Count James the Red or Countess Alexandria Marie) know your position on the various issues facing the Adrian Empire. Our votes and voices at the IGA reflect your wishes! After the monthly Crown Tourney February 20th will be an open discussion of the Imperial agenda.

ARCHERY: If you are interested in participating in Archery, please contact the Archer's Guild now forming. See Toma, Waylon of Winchestor or Sir Cameron.

WARRIOR'S GUILD: If you are interested in combat related issues (training, tourney operations, armor standards, qualifying, rhino-hiding, power issues, etc.), contact the Warrior's Guild. Lord Sir Iain Mcintosh is the Guildmaster.

ARTISAN'S GUILD: If you are interested in arts-related issues (judging, documentation requirements, sources, materials, techniques, etc.) contact the Artisan's Guild. Sir Adon and Lady Kate McPherson are organizing this important Guild.

As always, please contact Us if you have questions or ideas!

Kingdom Event Report!

The January Kingdom Tourney was held on the 16th. We had both Combat and Arts Tourneys.

The Combat Tourney was run by Sire Keara Craig, the Royal Minister of War & Joust.

The Knight's Renn List was won by Sir Adon Dragoon. The Knight's Steel List was won by Sir Rashalak.

The Arts Tourney results were not submitted, so there is no report at this time.

Canton of Thunar Tourney Report…

As for the January Canton Tourney, which was held on the 6th, it was a fine, though cold, night.

The Combat was fierce, with the Knight's Renn List Win going to Sire Drake Lyttle.

There was no Arts report submitted for this Tourney.

We honor all participants of the Events with a resounding Huzzah! And speaking of Huzzahs…

Three Huzzahs To...

…Sir Rashalak, who won the Knight's Steel List, and Sir Adon Dragoon, who won the Knight's Renn List at the January Kingdom Tourney.

…Sire Drake Lyttle, who won the January Canton of Thunar Combat Tourney in Knight's Renn.

…Sire Julie Ann McBride, for the formation of House Cadbury.

…Lord Sir Iain Duncan Mackintosh, for the formation of the Canton of Inverness.

…Sir Rashalak, for the formation of the Canton of Le Croix de Fir.

All of the participants of the Events.

If I have missed anyone in any event, please contact me, and I will correct this in the next issue of the Umbrian Mug.

This is to announce to the Populace that Sir Cameron FitzCanon has been appointed the new Royal Minister of Rolls. He will need a short period of time to get his paperwork in order, and then he will be available for questions concerning the Rolls of Umbria.

Recipe of the Month

This section offers a new recipe each month. The following recipe was culled from the Internet.

Caudel of Musculs to Potage (or Braised Mussels)

(Serves 6)

This would have been served on one of the fish eating days of the medieval calendar, and in a grand household, it would have been one of ten or fifteen of such dishes presented to the lord and his guests...

2 kg (4 1/2 lb) fresh mussels

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 large onion, very finely chopped

2 leeks, very finely sliced

40 g (1 1/2 oz) ground almonds

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon each ground saffron, cloves, salt

4 grinds of black pepper

450 mL (15 fl oz, 2 cups) milk

1-2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

Clean mussels thoroughly, removing beards, and discarding any which do not close when tapped. Bring 5 cm water to the boil in the bottom or a large pan with a few slices of lemon and 150 ml (2/3 c) white wine. Drop the mussels in, turn the heat up to maximum, cover with a lid and cook briskly for 3-4 minutes or till all of the mussels have opened. Discard any that do not.

Drain the remaining ones, remove from their shells and reserved the juices.

Meanwhile, cook the onion slowly in the oil till it is soft, but not colored. Put the leek with the almonds, spices and the mild in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for a few minutes then add to the shelled mussels along with the onions. Bring all to the boil and simmer together for a few minutes. Add the wine vinegar to taste and further seasoning if needed. Thin the sauce with some of the reserved cooking liquid, if you think it needs it. Serve the broth in bowls with plenty of fresh brown bread.

Bardic of the Month

This section is showcase for period pieces and "home made" bardics. This month's selection was submitted by His Royal Majesty King Duriel. If anyone else would like to offer any material for publication, please contact the Royal Chronicler - you will not be turned down!

I THINK SOMETIMES ABOUT

I think sometimes about

What I would tell her

If I were near enough.

It makes the miles shorter

To call my sorrow out

to her, with thoughts.

Often the people here

See in me the figure

Of a carefree man,

For so I let it seem.

Had I not taken on

Such lofty love,

I might be saved.

I did it without thinking.

And every moment now I suffer

pain that presses deep.

Now my own constancy

Has tied down my heart

And will not let it part

From her, as things are now.

It is a great wonder:

She whom I love with greatest torment

Has always acted like my enemy.

Now may no man ever get to know

What such a burden is,

It weighs down hard.

I thought I knew what it was before,

Now I know it better.

Over there, where home is, I was sad,

And here three times more.

However little good it does me,

Still I have this pleasure:

No one can stop me

From thinking close to her,

Wherever on earth I turn.

This comfort she must let me have.

If she takes it well,

That gives me joy forever,

For I, more than any other man,

Was always hers.

With all of the Estates movement of the past few months, this is an approximation of how the Kingdom is laid out. I do realize there are problems with this chart - I call upon all Estate holders to contact myself or Lady Skye O'Malley with their corrections for this chart. This information will be posted on the Kingdom website upon completion of all changes. Please do contact one of us promptly! - Lord Sir James the Red, Royal Chronicler and Editor of the Umbrian Mug
